What Are Teenage Mental Health Stigmas?

Teenage mental health stigmas are negative stereotypes and attitudes (like viewing mental issues as weakness or attention-seeking) that make teens fear judgment, social exclusion, and bullying, preventing them from seeking crucial help, with influences coming from peers, family, media, and culture, worsened by factors like poverty or race. These stigmas create barriers to care, leading to isolation, discrimination, and untreated conditions, despite the high prevalence of issues like anxiety and depression in adolescents.

You're allowed to take up space.

Common teenage mental health problems include anxiety disorders (like GAD, social anxiety, panic disorder), depression, ADHD, eating disorders, substance use disorders, and behavioral/conduct problems. If you're concerned, professional help is crucial for diagnosis and treatment.

It's okay to not be okay sometimes.

Signs to watch out for include:
1) Changes in mood, sleep, or eating habits.
2) Withdrawal from friends, family, or activities.
3) Extreme self-criticism or preoccupation with appearance.
4) Substance misuse or self-harm.
